In the autumn of 1953, two babies born in the same British town just a few months apart began life on quietly different diets. Neither family made a choice about it — and yet, seventy years later, their medical records would tell noticeably different stories.

Children exposed to less sugar during their first 1,000 days — the window from conception to their second birthday — went on to develop fewer cancers, showed slower cellular ageing, and were still eating differently in middle age. The window is short, but what happens inside it appears to leave a long shadow.
An Experiment No Scientist Could Have Run
Testing this question properly would be impossible today. You cannot randomly assign one group of babies to a high-sugar diet and another to a low-sugar one, then wait seventy years to see what happens. History, however, ran the experiment on its own.
Britain rationed sugar through the Second World War and kept the limits in place long afterwards. When rationing finally ended in September 1953, sugar consumption across the country nearly doubled within months. That created two groups of children who were otherwise very similar — same country, same economy, same healthcare system — but whose earliest diets differed sharply, purely by accident of birth date.
What the Health Records Showed
Working with data from the UK Biobank, a long-running health database of British adults, Associate Professor Weilong Zhang and colleagues followed more than 64,000 people born between 1951 and 1956.
The differences were not subtle. Adults whose first 1,000 days fell under rationing had lower rates of five separate cancers — liver, prostate, rectal, lung and breast. Liver cancer showed the largest gap at around 69 per cent lower, while breast cancer was about 36 per cent lower. These are the kinds of margins usually associated with major lifestyle interventions, not with a few months of infant feeding.
Ageing Written Into the Cells
The researchers also looked at biological ageing rather than simply counting birthdays. They measured telomeres, the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten as cells divide across a lifetime. Longer telomeres generally point to slower biological ageing.
The rationing group had longer telomeres, corresponding to roughly 2.2 years less ageing at the cellular level. They also carried lower levels of granzyme B, a protein that rises when the immune system is under sustained strain. As Zhang described it, even relatively small differences in sugar exposure over a short period may leave effects that are still observable half a century later.
Why Early Tastes Tend to Stick
There is a second explanation running alongside the biology, and it is far easier to act on. When the same people were surveyed at age 50, those raised under rationing were still eating less sugar, eating less overall, and keeping more varied diets.
A palate formed in infancy seems to hold. Children who grow up expecting food to taste intensely sweet tend to keep chasing that intensity into adulthood. Children who learn sweetness from fruit, dates and milk tend to find heavily sweetened food less appealing later on. The first two years are not only a metabolic window — they are a training period for taste.
What This Means for Indian Families
This is where the study becomes practical rather than alarming. The finding is not that sugar in infancy dooms a child. It is that the first 1,000 days are unusually influential, and that they sit largely within a family's control.
The World Health Organization already advises against adding sugar to foods for children under two. In practice that means reading labels on packaged baby cereals and biscuits, which often carry more added sugar than parents expect, and leaning on traditional weaning foods — ragi porridge, mashed banana, soaked and ground dates, simple khichdi — that carry sweetness naturally alongside fibre and minerals.
